Yarra Council Elections Update October 2024

VOTE FOR CLIMATE ACTION, ENVIRONMENT  & LOCAL DEMOCRACY

Use your Yarra council election vote for action on the climate emergency and building local democracy.   You can find out which ward you are in by going to the VEC website.  Yarra Council candidates are listed here on the website. Vote Climate is a network linking community groups working on solutions to the climate crisis.  They have surveyed candidates across Victoria with a climate and democracy questionnaireYou can find the responses of Yarra Council Candidates to the Vote Climate questionnaire  here. You will also find a folder called "Extra questions from YCAN".  These questions were complied by the YCAN team to elicit responses to some specific issues in Yarra, such as support for funding the Climate Emergency plan, sustainable transport, and waste collection.

STOP BURNING PLASTIC

Use your council election vote to help stop five waste-to-energy incinerators being built and prevent councils signing long-term contracts to supply waste to be burnt.   If we want to move towards a circular economy, we need to massively reduce waste and ensure that scarce resources are used over and over again. If councils refuse to sign up to supply waste, this could stop these toxic waste incinerators in their tracks.  Find out more here and check if your council candidates have signed the pledge here

Streets People Love is a campaign supporting and promoting the efforts of local government to create safe and pleasant streets for people to live, work, play and move in. Campaign members are community and advocacy groups representing residents around Victoria. Find out whether your local council candidates have signed the Streets People Love pledge and how they scored on the survey.

Briefing Paper on Climate and Democracy from Vote Climate

We are in a world of escalating crises. Climate breakdown is beginning, and democracy and social bonds are under threat. How can councils help us build stronger communities and work together to meet the challenges we face? We won't get the strong action we need on the climate emergency without improving democracy at all levels of government. We need the voices of ordinary people to be heard when councils - and governments - make tough decisions that affect all of us. This paper was sent to all council election candidates. It has lots of useful links on the increasing use of Citizens' Assemblies as a way of breaking political deadlocks. Vote Climate !The YCAN Team
